Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (September, 1989)
Author: Richard B. Hays
Average review score:

A well written treatise on Paul's use of the Old Testament
A lot of books on biblical studies are not very well crafted. This one is. I also like how Hays brings out the Old Testament nuances in Paul's writings. He recognizes throughout the book that Paul does not always intend to directly quote the Old Testament. He points out that the apostle often makes verbal echoes of OT passages that would resonate powerfully to the Jewish members of the early Christian congregations. Plus, as a bonus, I like all of the poetry that Hays puts in the book that captures theological motifs.

Hays is a craftsman with words
Nascent New Testament theologians should look to Dr. Richard Hays of Duke Divinity School for how to construct a sentence that is both entertaining and thought provoking. His are beautifully written as well as meaningful.

It is Dr. Hays thesis that we can better understand the writings of Paul if we first understand his hermenuetics. And for Paul, that means that he reads consistently the Christian experience through a lens that has been crafted by a fine honing of knowledge from the Hebrew Scriptures. It is in the pulling up of Hebrew Scriptures that preceded or follow the obvious linkage with a particular Pauline passage that we find the most meaning Hays argues.

His writing is compelling, understandable and, yes , persuasive. I would commend this book to anyone who is trying to understand Paul and what he means. This is of particular valuable in developing a biblical understanding of the theological implications of Romans 9-11.

A Garden of Thoughts: My Affirmation Journal
Published in Hardcover by Hay House (January, 1999)
Author: Louise L. Hay

At Wal-Mart, this book costs only $11.86

A Great Tool for Affirming Yourself
Each page of this book contains an affirmation, along with space to write a few lines, and record the day, date and time of your entry. You can either use the space to write your thoughts on the affirmation itself, or use it to jot a few lines about anything on your mind.

The affirmations themselves are inspiring and thought-provoking. Physically, the book is small enough to fit easily into a large purse or knapsack, and its hard cover is beautifully decorated. The spiral binding also makes it easy to write in for lefties. The only drawback that I can see is that the space allowed for filling in the day, date and time is a bit small for those of us with larger handwriting.

If you're working with affirmations and self-esteem issues, this is a great tool.

Grasping God's Word
Published in Hardcover by Zondervan (01 August, 2001)
Authors: J. Scott Duvall and J. Daniel Hays
Average review score:

A great introductory work
This book is a giant leap forward in beginning exegesis. It opens a world of possibilities for the beginning student as well as serving as a great review for experienced interpreters. The book is delightfully written, and prayerfully organized. I can't imagine a better book to begin the interpretive journey. While written with college students in mind, anyone who is serious about grasping God's word will find it very helpful!

Finally! An intermediate level hermeneutics book.
For a long time the only books available for those interested in Bible study methodology have fallen into two general categories. There were those written more at the popular level (ie. Kay Arthur's Inductive method, Tim LaHaye's How to Study the Bible, etc...); or those that were more technical (Osborne's Hermeneutical Spiral, Vanhoozer's Is There a Meaning in this Text, etc...). However, there has been no real attempt to weave these two types together; an easily readable text that doesn't betray the Spiritual aspect of Bible Study, while at the same time teaching the standard methods of interpretation. Fee and Stuart took a huge step that way with How to Read the Bible for All it's Worth; I submit that their intentions were perfected by Duvall and Hays in this book. Here is a book that can teach college students, seminarians, and even laypeople the correct methods of hermeneutics for every genre in the Bible. At the same time, it remains light and sometimes even funny. I can't imagine there being a more perfect book for those that are interested in truly Grasping God's Word.

Heart Thoughts: A Treasury of Inner Wisdom/132

Hay is the best!!
I believe the best book I've ever read is "Heart Thoughts (A Treasury of Inner Wisedome)". This book, written by Louise L. Hay really has a way of opening up the minds of the readers to new ways of thinking and viewing the world around you. She introduces you to a universe of positive, personal affirmations and sets you on the path to total acceptance and love for everyone and everything. Hay shows readers that there's SO MUCH more to life than one may think. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in metaphysics and personal growth.

Sometimes you just need some good inspiration.
It *is* possible to change your negative perspectives into a positive lifestyle. Simple affirmations, simple solutions, and possible positive energy. Open the book to any page and reflect on a new discovery, or look something up by subject. Once I started the book, I couldn't put it down. A great gift idea for yourself or someone you care about.

RELACIONES RESTAURADAS
Admirable trabajo. Me identifico mucho con esta obra.

Awesome! Fantástico
I just finished reading this book. Well, I had no idea I was going to be able to assimilate what it really means to forgive and be forgiven. I thank God for such a great work.

Holy Fools and Mad Hatters: A Handbook for Hobbyhorse Holiness
Published in Paperback by Forest of Peace Books (December, 1993)
Author: Edward Hays
Average review score:

Irreverent, joyful, and wonderfully worship-filled!
Hays unique approach to spirituality may challenge some comfort zones, but he also challenges the reader to meet God in unconvetional places of our lives like frustrations and problems.

Fools for God
This book on spirituality is very light-hearted but at times will hit you where it hurts, especially when Father Hays pokes fun at some of our preconceived prejudices. He shows us how important it is to form a deep relationship with God but that we shouldn't take ourselves too seriously.

Kevin and His Dad

Ya Gotta Work Before You Can Play!
Sure, sure, this book provides a good African-American role model, shows an authentic big-city setting, yadda yadda yadda.

What my wife really enjoyed about this book is that Kevin and his dad spend the first 2/3rds of the book doing CHORES around the house together. So, ladies, if you want your man helping out more with the laundry, the dishes, the windows, etc., this is a good way to get your kids pestering Daddy to do just that.

This is a well-written, well-paced book, and is age-appropriate from 3 to 7-8. A very pleasant read. Highly recommended.

Kevin and His Dad
This book is terrific for any child who can never get enough of his/her dad. Kevin gets to spend an entire day just with his dad. I especially like the way they clean house together before they enjoy the rest of their day; a trip to the park and then, a movie. The illustrations are done with such tenderness and beauty that an adult will appreciate the reading experience as much as the child.

Kickin' Up Some Cowboy Fun
Learning well-disguised as fun! Humorous and engaging activities encourage creativity, problem-solving, and logical thinking, while teaching fascinating bits of western history! Give a child knowledge, and you give that child power -- this book is full of little known facts that children will love. Clear, concise directions and the use of common household materials allow children to experiment and create things easily and economically. A super alternative to video and computer games --parents, grandparents, and educators should cheer the availability of such a child friendly tool. A must have for anyone who enjoys, or enjoys teaching about, the wild west.

Tons of Fun for the Kiddos
"Kickin' Up Some Cowboy Fun" is packed plum full of all kinds of activities, games, and recipes for all the wanna-be cowpokes around your ranch or school. Great for those rainy days when the kids are just itchin to wrestle a dogie or lasso the kitchen chairs. Lots of well-researched information about cowboys, cowgirls, and western lore for teachers looking for ideas for Rodeo Days. There's nothing else like this book on the market and I'd bet my poke it'll be a hot seller!

A Life in Hand: Creating the Illuminated Journal
Published in Paperback by Gibbs Smith Publisher (November, 1999)
Authors: Hanna Hinchman, Penny Powers, Anne Mitchell, and Chuck Hays
Average review score:

Blending drawing and writing in journals
When I bought the first edition of this book several years ago, I went back and bought 6 more copies which I gave to my closest friends. Each felt as I did, that this was a profound book that stimulated creative journal keeping for inner and outer experiences to sharpen every day. I'd long looked for someone who could guide my urges to write and to draw, to stimulate me to put my observations out where I could really grasp them. Hinchman showed me the way with writing and memory exercises which I actually did and enjoyed, basic art technique, encouragement, and the idea that my scribbles and jottings could become a treasured personal record.

Essential reading for anyone who keeps a journal.
This book has created a nationwide interest in illustrated journal-keeping. It's a friendly, exquisitely illustrated volume from someone who is obviously nature-connected and literate to boot. If you like maps, natural history illustration, or if you are one of those who have always wanted to draw, but don't believe you can....this is the book for you
